Reading Goals for 2023

Like every year, for the last three years, I would like to read 50 books. So far, I could not achieve this goal, but this year might be the year that I do. Yet, my biggest goal is to read in multiple languages. I love reading literature in its original language, and since I also love learning languages sometimes this is possible. It does take me more time compared to reading in English or Dutch, but still, it provides a gratifying feeling as well. The languages in which I would like to read are Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and German. And, I already have some specific books in mind.

For Spanish, I would like to read ‘’Cementerio de Animales’’ by Stephen King. I am still a beginner in Spanish, so I think it would be good to read a book that I already know and love. In Japanese, I want to read three books and I already started reading the first book of the Harry Potter series. When I succeed at finishing this book, I will pick the other two. Lastly, I would love to read some poems from Rainer Maria Rilke in German from the book ‘’Die Schönsten Gedichte’’. These are the languages that I am still learning, so my reading skills are poor and slow. I will not count these books towards my 50-book goal, it is just for the purpose of language learning.

Russian is my native language, but I do not read many books in it. I want to change that, and for this reason, I am going to read three books this year in Russian.

  1. The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostojevski
  2. Jevgeni Onegin by Alexander Pushkin
  3. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

Other goals for my reading year are:

  • To participate in a book club. I chose the ‘’A Game of Tomes Book club’’ which is hosted on YouTube by Emmie and CarolynMarieReads. See this link for more information.
  • To read long books that have been on my TBR forever: 1Q84 and Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami, War and Peace by Leo Tolstoj, and Dracula by Bram Stoker.
  • To reread House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. I will start rereading this masterpiece in February. If you want to read along, you can! When I’m finished, I will post an in-depth review of this book.
  • To start reading the Bible (King James version, Oxford edition), not for religious reasons but for literary ones. The Bible has been an inspiration for multiple literary works, one of them is of course The Divine Comedy by Dante. I think it is important to read the Bible to understand the references in other books.
  • To continue reading books by Stephen King.
  • To read Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is the last book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
