It’s finally September and that means that my favourite season is starting; Autumn. Usually, I only plan a yearly TBR (and I have one Great TBR for life), but for the Fall season, I always have specific books I want to read. Weird and spooky fiction is just more interesting during the time of trees changing colours, the lowering of temperature and the gradually darkening evenings.
September
In September, I plan to finish most of the books which I’m currently reading:
- 1984 by George Orwell
- 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami
- Autonomy and Trust in Bioethics by Onora O’Neill
- Technology and the Virtues by Shannon Vallor
- Nichomachean Ethics by Aristotle
I don’t think that this is entirely realistic but I will do my best to bring the list at least down a notch. If you want to read my thoughts on these books and why I’m reading them, check out my latest newsletter.
I have a couple of other books that I’m reading in the background. Maybe I will try to finish some of those too. But the focus will be on the five mentioned above.
October
This is the most important reading month when I try to read a much weird and spooky fiction that I can. Some authors keep reappearing on my list every year because I want to read all of their books and I love to read them during this time. Obviously, there is no better autumnal atmosphere than that in the books of Ray Bradbury. This time I will read October Country by him. I’m really looking forward to this short story collection. Last year I read The Halloween Tree and it was a real treat!
Then I will keep up with the dark and gloomy atmosphere by reading another horror classic; The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. I was inspired to read this novella after watching Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of it, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and finding out that Henry James is considered to be one of the greatest novelists of the English language.
Then I will continue my journey to even darker realms of literature by reading Osamu Dazai’s semi-autobiographical novel No Longer Human. Followed by Junji Ito’s manga adaptation of the novel by the same title. I think this will be the most depressing read of the month but I’m still looking forward to exploring these two extraordinary works.
Lastly, this reading list cannot be complete without one of my favourite authors. Of course, I will be reading Stephen King too. A month ago, I purchased his latest short story collection, You Like It Darker, and I cannot wait to start reading it. I think that October will be the best time to enjoy his stories.
November
In the last month of autumn, I will again dedicate myself to finishing up the books I will be in the middle of. And then, hopefully, I can start on the last part of The Lord of the Rings trilogy; The Return of the King. I wanted to read this book two years ago but every time something gets in the way.
I also hope to read a short historical non-fiction book, On Palestine by Noam Chomsky, which I had planned for the beginning of this year but again failed to do so.
And then I will move into the winter months with another classic written by one of the Bronte sisters, Emily, which I think will be perfect for the colder wintery atmosphere; Wuthering Heights.
During the whole Fall season, I will also be reading some poetry from the book A Poem for Every Autumn Day. I purchased this book last year and went through some of the poems, but now I hope to read the entire book. And of course, I will be rewatching Gilmore Girls like I have done every year for the last ten years or so.
